Why "just play calming music" for pets doesn't work

Hi Reader,

First, thank you to everyone who replied to my last email. Storms, vet visits, being left home alone, and fireworks came up again and again. If that's your pet too, you're in good company.

Here's the thing I got wrong for the first month of doing this: I assumed "calming" was one thing. Play something soft, something low, something with a nice frequency attached to it, and the job's done.

It's not. A dog who panics during thunderstorms and a cat who hides when you leave for work are dealing with completely different kinds of stress. From different triggers, different physical responses to different timing. A one-size-fits-all calming track is a decent guess. It's not a solution.

So I stopped trying to make "one thing that calms pets" and started building around the actual moments: the fifteen minutes before a vet visit. The exact sound profile of a thunderstorm. The specific quiet of an empty house. Each one built and tested for that moment, not for pets in general.

That's what I've been finishing up. It's called the Calm Collection, and it's built around the real triggers, not a generic playlist.

I'm opening it up in two days. I wanted you to have the context first, because I think it'll make more sense once you see it than if I'd just dropped a link with no explanation.

Talk soon, Jen - Furr 💜

P.S. If you want to see more, here's one people really love.

Somewhere in the last couple months, something changed in the data. Every single time I made something specific — not "calming music for pets," but "for the ten minutes before a vet visit" or "for the exact sound of fireworks" — it did dramatically better than the generic stuff....
